Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill founded the Talisker distillery on the rough island of Skye in 1830. Built in Carbost at the Loch Harport, it is the only distillery on the island. Early days saw triple distillation until 1928. In 1960 the distillery was destroyed by a fire, but replica’s of the original stills were built securing the typical character of the spirit, obtained by a relatively high amount of phenols. Talisker is currently part of Diageo’s portfolio. In 1988 it was added to the Classic Malts series, making it a bestselling malt. The typical silty, peaty and peppery whisky is also used in Johnnie Walker blends and the Drambuie licqueur. The 18 Year Old was awarded ‘Whisky of the Year’ in 2007 in a blind tasting by Whisky Magazine.
