Kilchoman is one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries with an output of only approx. 90.00 litres per annum. It’s situated on the westcoast of Islay, the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, reknowned for its peated whiskies. It has a small, but very nice visitor center and café and is the youngest distillery on the island, the first to be built in over 100 years. Owner Anthony Wills started building the distillery in 2005. The General Manager is John MacLellan, who got famous for his work at Bunnahabhain. Kilchoman is a farm distillery, meaning they grow their own barley (on the Rockside Farm), that is malted at the distillery itself (although part of the malt is obtained from Port Ellen maltings). Distillation, maturation and bottling are all done locally in an effort to create an authentic Islay malt. It is heavily peated at 50ppm. The first cask was filled on 14 December 2005 and the first single malt was released in June 2009. The plan is to release a 5, 8, 10 and 12 Year Old single malt in due course.
